Adam's Peak
The Sacred Sunrise Pilgrimage
About Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)
Adam's Peak, or 'Sri Pada' (the Sacred Footprint), is one of Sri Lanka's most extraordinary landmarks, revered as a holy site by four major religions. This majestic mountain is a beacon of unity and faith, drawing countless pilgrims who ascend its slopes to witness the spectacular sunrise. The rock formation at the summit is identified by Buddhists as the Buddha's footprint, by Hindus as that of Shiva, and by Muslims and Christians as that of Adam.
The pilgrimage is a unique spiritual and physical journey, almost always undertaken at night. Climbers ascend thousands of stone steps, guided by lights during the pilgrimage season (December to May), sharing a sense of community with fellow devotees. The reward for this challenging trek is the awe-inspiring view from the peak at dawn, as the sun illuminates the surrounding landscape. Climbers also gather to witness the mystical phenomenon of the mountain's perfectly triangular shadow being cast upon the clouds below as the sun rises higher.
